Khat is a very slow growing plant that produces green leaves and takes some five years to grow fully. It is a land intensive, capital intensive and water intensive plant. The leaves are chewed by a major African and Middle Eastern population. It is also has an essential cultural aspect in countries around the Arabian Peninsula and Africa particularly Ethiopia, Yemen and Madagascar.

Somalia: In 2006, the use and distribution of Khat was banned by the Supreme Islamic Courts Council, which took over the country. However, due to widespread protests in Kismayo and the victory of the Provisional Government backed by Ethiopian forces, it returned to the streets of Mogadishu.

United Kingdom: Khat is not a controlled substance in United Kingdom and the country’s various attempts to reconsider the drug has been cancelled. UK serves as the main Khat dealing hub to other destinations throughout the world, especially to North America.

Australia: The Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956 of Australia controls and regulates the import of Khat here. Thus, individual consumers must seek permission from Therapeutic Goods Administration and the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service to import maximum 5 kilograms of Khat per month for personal usage.
